I've always loved cooking elaborate meals and hosting friends for some good bites. When I moved to NYC in 2009, I found a great apartment ... and it's tiny. So, I needed to make-do with the space that I had. I got a gateleg table and a kitchen cart, and I was off.
My first few homemade meals consisted of lasagna and chili. I was working a lot, so I needed things that could feed me for the week and keep well. That fall, when I received the Bon Appetit cookie issue in preparation for the holidays, I set my heart on making the Chocolate Peppermint Bark Cookies. I hadn't yet attempted something as messy as this sounded. I had a friend in town, though, and we were set on an afternoon of cookie baking.
So, we opened my gateleg table, spread out our ingredients, and we got to baking. The worst part was crushing the candy canes. First, we tried chopping the candy cane, but they were flying all over the place. So, we put them in a heavy duty zip lock bag and used a pint glass to do the dirty work. We rolled that pint glass back and forth to get the candy cane into the appropriate chip-size, and it worked just fine. This definitely saved us on clean-up! Thank goodness, or I would still be picking the sticky bits of candy cane out of my area rug.
In the middle of jockeying for space in front of the oven, my friend Kate suggested this blog. Well, she really suggested a TV show, but this is a start. So, The Inadequate Kitchen was born. I hope to bring you the trials and tribulations of adequately working within an inadequate kitchen, as well as a few tips.
